The Social Worker / Counselor's primary function is to assist students who are experiencing social or emotional difficulties in the schoool environment. This person acts as an advocate for students who are in need of assistance in acquiring social skills that are critical to academic success. This teacher's responsibilities include assisting with meetings of the school Teacher Assistance Team; and teaching, coaching, leading, and overseeing social / emotional interventions designed by this Team. He or she must be familiar with planning and implementing Response to Intervention (RtI) strategies and must be willing to assume a leadership role in assessing students and in designing programs and services to meet their individual needs. The Social Worker / Counselor must be an excellent communicator who is willing and able to involve parents and classroom teachers in supporting the modifications and accommodations designed to assist their children.

rnThe responsibilities of the Social Worker / Guidance Counselor include, but are not limited to:
rn
identifying students in need of small group or individual social or emotional interventions through the use of assessment data
rn
screening students to establish proper interventions.
rn
providing small group or individual interventions to address identified student needs.
rn
assessing student progress regularly and using assessment results to imporve subsequent actions.
rn
providing coaching to instructional staff by acting as a resource to classroom teachers and content-area specialists.
rn
assisting teachers in organizing their academic programs, selecting materials, implementing teaching techniques, and in relating their instructional program to the special needs of individual students.
rn
providing professional development support in the implementation of research-based best practices.
rn
working with teachers and other educators to develop and implement plans that meet the needs of all students.
rn
maintaining frequent communication with the school principal and parents regarding students.
rn
regularly conferring with the principal regarding the needs of students.

rnUnder the general supervision of the School Principal, the successful candidate will:
rn-serve as a positive role model and support the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church at all times.
rn-create a faith-focused learning environment within his or her office and school.
rn-create a vibrant Catholic culture within his or her school that is emphasized through the candidate's words, deeds, manners of dress, and actions.
rn-integrate religion within lessons.
rn-facilitate student success and growth in faith formation and interpersonal skills.
rn-document student progress, activities, and outcomes and share as appropriate.
rn-differentiate instruction to address specific needs of individual students
rn-create a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment
rn-regularly provide feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
rn-collaborate with classroom teachers to design individualized lessons to build key social and emotional skills appropriate to grade levels.
rn-assist in overseeing school RtI and Teacher Assistance Team activities related to social and emotional services.

Conducts ongoing assessments of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to accommodate individual student's needs.

Conducts individual and small group interventions as needed.
rn

Continues to acquire professional knowledge and to learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district and school procedures and applicable laws.
rn
Encourages parental involvement in student education and institutes effective communication strategies with administrators, students, and parents.
rn
Ensures that student conduct and behavior conforms with the school's standards and diocesan policies
rn
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
rn
Participates in faculty meetings and committees.
rn
Understands and adheres to all principles and tenets of the Catholic faith.
rn
Maintains a lifestyle, both within and outside of the school environment, that is in full accord with Church teachings.

Additional Duties
rnPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and/or Catholic Schools Office administrators as designated by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

rn Travel Requirements
rnTravels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

rn Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
rn
Knowledge of current teaching methods related to social work and/or counseling services.
rn
Knowledge and practice of the Catholic faith.
rn
Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis procedures, and the formulation of data-informed interventions.
rn
Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
rn
Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
rn
Ability to collaborate with classroom teachers and to assist them in differentiating instruction to meet the social and emotional needs of students..
Ability to document and communicate student progress.
rn
Ability to organize and coordinate work.
rn
Ability to reflect upon and to self-evaluate performance and professional growth.
rn
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Ability to clearly communicate with all constituents including (but not limited to); administration of St. Michael Parish School, pastors, parish priests, colleagues, students, parents, and prospective parents.

Qualifications Profile
rn
Certification/Licensure: The candidate must hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) and/or Illinois licensure as a Social Worker (LCSW), or a School Guidance Counselor.
rn
Previous experience in utilizing differentiation strategies to meet the instructional and social-emotional needs of individual learners is preferred.
rn
Exceptional classroom management and communication skills are essential to success in this role.

Education
rn
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Special Education, Elementary Education, or a related discipline.
rn
A Master’s Degree in a related area is preferred
rn
Successful experience in a working with a Teacher Assistance Team is a plus.
rn

This is a full-time (benefitted) position.

Compensation is in accordance with Category (degrees earned) and Step (years of experience) placement on the current Catholic Schools Office
