Program Safety Coordinator
Reports To:
Director of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness

Under the direction of the Director of Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness, helps maintain and implement risk management and safety systems for all activities and events within the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., including extensive outdoor recreation and education programs. Works with volunteers and staff to ensure appropriate safety practices, policy, and protocols are in place and followed. Provides risk management support as directed. Manages technical systems to track and maintain data and other relevant information.

The Program Safety Coordinator works extensively with other departments including Finance, Information Technology, National Outings, Sierra Student Coalition, Local Outings and Chapters, Organizing, Advancement and other programs across the organization. Develops and maintains internal and external contacts to enable work and facilitate risk management throughout the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***..

Job Activities
Maintains and manages risk management systems and communicates protocols for all activities within and across departments. Supports staff implementing safety procedures to ensure consistency for all risk related activities and events.
Supports crisis response plans for all risk-related activities. Serves on responder list to address and coordinate on-site response, victim/next of kin relations, media relations, communication with local authorities, leader/participant debrief, and other necessary communications. Staffs 24/7 emergency line, serves as crisis response team member.
Contacts leaders and participants for all filed Incident Reports to assess the post-incident care and status of injured participant(s). Works with supervisor to recommend policy or procedural changes based upon any lessons learned from follow-up. Compiles and maintains quarterly incident summary reports. Maintains incident database, compiles annual incident report including major findings and recommendations.
Works with supervisor to develop and maintain appropriate tracking systems and documentation. Maintains and updates printed and electronic materials. Works with supervisor to ensure all activities and events are in compliance with insurance requirements.
Maintain knowledge of current practices and trends in risk management for events and outdoor activities. Works with supervisor to obtain external advice when necessary to ensure the highest reasonable standards in risk management practice.
Provides training on risk management and safety systems as needed for staff and volunteers. Maintains Program Safety resources across current and future platforms.
Coordinates work and project implementation between field-office safety and security teams. Assists in the management of facility security and safety protocols and resources.
Serves as a supporting position for the development and execution of safety, security and emergency preparedness projects across the organization; helps maintain systems, compliance, communication and management.
Works with supervisor to conduct and coordinate periodic risk reviews. Works cooperatively with staff and volunteers to implement recommendations.
Serves as a team member for the joint staff and volunteer Program Safety Team. Help draft potential policies and procedures, conduct research, and keep the team informed on standards in the field/industry.
Under direction of supervisor, helps prepare reports for senior staff on risk management priorities, budget resources and risk issues.
Processes Certificates of insurance across organization along with Finance staff, advises on insurance forms and details.
Reviews activity proposals and event planning forms to prepare for supervisor approval or as directed.
Serves as **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Minor Specialist, point-person for advising and directing operational management of minors for all activities and programs.
Knowledge and Skills
B.A. degree in Business and Outdoor Recreation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 2 years' prior experience in safety and risk management of outdoor recreation programs and activities including experience with youth programs.
Prior experience working with outdoor programs/operations, particularly with youth, in wilderness and front-country settings. International experience is preferred.
Extensive knowledge and experience in a wide variety of safety and risk management protocols and practices.
Strong written and oral communication skills, comfort and experience with training and working with a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders.
Ability to work as constructive team member with both staff and volunteers.
Advanced understanding of information systems and desktop productivity applications (word processors, spreadsheets, browsers).
Excellent organizational skills and ability to track multiple priorities.
Excellent interpersonal skills in working with the public, volunteers, and staff.
Experience working under pressure, dealing with life/death situations and managing critical situations. Ability to maintain and protect personal and organizational information with adequate discretion, and to employ sound judgement during difficult incidents.
